"PlACEs!" stands for:
Play Acting for Children in English.
Drama promotes active learning
Studies show repeatedly that drama yields a greater depth of understanding as well as a marked improvement in retention. The drama student is not a passive recipient but rather and active participant and he/she engages at a much deeper and personal level than just being "given" the information.
Communication is a prime benefit of play acting and role play helps to promote tolerance and empathy.
The idea for Places!
The idea for a play acting group was the result of numerous requests from my children, both of whom love to perform before an audience.
The idea has developed somewhat since then.... and my intention is to establish "Places!" as a drama/play-acting group for children of primary school age expressing a desire to explore situations and characters by means of playacting. The drama club is now in its second year and we are getting ready for the second musical--Treasure Island, we are all having fun while getting to grips with this wonderful classic.
Annual concert for all students
Each Places student takes part in the annual concert. Performing before an audience is part of the drama learning experience and helps to build a positive, confident self image. Participation in the concert requires self control and discipline, both of which will serve the student well in all aspects of life.
Irrespective of the above, it is a chance for the children to make mom and dad proud by showing what they can do on stage!
We are in the final rehearsals for our second musical, Treasure Island, adapted from the book by Robert Louis Stevenson. Dates for this production are
Saturday, 8 May 2010 at 19:00
Sunday, 9 May 2010 at 15:00.
Tickets for Treasure Island
Tickets will go on sale at 11:30 on 17 April 2010. This will be at the Catholic church just outside of the normal drama rehearsal room. Tickets are also available telephonically or via email.
